Black + Blum:

“Who knew Charcoal filters your water?”

Moving from New England to Park City, UT back in 2011, one of the first things I noticed (besides a lack of my beloved trees) was the tap water had a slight chlorine smell to it and all of my hardware was stained with what can only be described as “white chalky gunk.”

Amazing filtered water bottle

After excitedly chatting with my neighbors – who quickly reassured me that yes this was a normal issue in town, and NO, I would not be poisoned – I knew my spoiled New England palate would not be pleased with this news. To be totally honest, I have never been much for a big clunky refrigerator filter, after all – you can’t even take that with you! So finding the Black + Blum Eau Good filtered water bottle was life saver for me!

It may seem counter-intuitive to purify your drinking water with a stick of charcoal, but the Japanese have been doing it for centuries. Binchotan is an active carbon made from tree branches and is renowned for its ability to soften water, add good minerals and absorb unwanted tastes and odors, such as chlorine – WOOHOO! It is also super super easy to use.

The bottle is specially designed to hold the Binchotan charcoal securely in place. Simply drop, squeeze, tilt and lock, to prevent it moving inside the bottle. The charcoal is an organic product, so the thickness can vary.

DO NOTE: The important thing is that the charcoal locks in place, even if it appears to be only barely inside the groove. If you force the charcoal into the space, you can cause the bottle to crack.

Just charcoal

The fact that the charcoal is ready to use is awesome. Simply fill your bottle/carafe with drinking (potable) tap water and wait for the charcoal to filter impurities from the water.

Leaving it overnight is ideal – they claim you will taste the difference after just one hour, but I found that my Park City chlorine heavy water needs at least two/three hours for optimal consumption, 8 hours for almost zero taste or smell! I would often fill my bottle at night and leave in the fridge, making sure it was ready for my next busy day!

The natural cork and silicone stopper is held securely in place by the reassuring stainless steel ring, so there is no danger of the bottle leaking in your bag. Also, the fabric loop makes it easy to carry your bottle while on the go and it also helps you pull the stainless steel ring to secure the stopper.

With time, you will notice a decrease in the filter’s effectiveness on the water taste. You can then recharge it by simply boiling it for ten minutes. The boiling washes out the impurities and frees the charcoal up to absorb some more – giving it a total life span of 6 months. As long as it delivers the desired effect, it means it is working.

This long-life is perfect for active dog mama’s life myself or Pokemon-chasing parties like Kyle had last review, HA!
